2014 – Planning granted for New Covent Garden Market

Our Birmingham studio worked with VINCI St. Modwen (VSM) and its partner Covent Garden Market Authority (CGMA), securing planning permission in 2014 to deliver the landmark redevelopment of the 57 acre New Covent Garden Market site in Nine Elms, London. This major, multi-phased project is currently on site and over the next 10 years will both modernise and secure the future of the iconic market whilst delivering one of the largest schemes in London’s Nine Elms regeneration area.

In collaboration with SOM, we delivered a seamless masterplan that would establish a new public face to the wholesale market, and a vision for a new Food Quarter for London, including outdoor market space, retail, restaurants and cafes integrated within a future new residential community adjacent to The Food Exchange, all served by the new Nine Elms Tube Station.

Following the agreed masterplan, BDP developed the detailed design of the market which will provide modern facilities consolidated on one site for the 200 tenant businesses, employing over 2,500 people. A number of phases are now complete including the new Food Exchange on the ‘triangle’ site and Flower Market on Nine elms Lane.
