1973 – Albert Dock Conservation Project

Liverpool Council’s decision to acquire and convert the Albert Dock as the new home for Liverpool Polytechnic followed the recommendation of our feasibility study of shortlisted sites. The commission was for the conversion of the Victorian structures around the seven acre dock, the largest attempt to reuse old buildings for modern activity in Europe at the time. All planning approval and listed building consent was obtained but due to other factors the project did not proceed.

However, a decade later, we completed the conservation and adaptive reuse of the listed but derelict Dock Trade Office building, opposite Albert Dock, into Granada TV news studios. This was the first of a series of successful high profile projects in Liverpool city centre including the Ropewalks Masterplan and Liverpool One.
